fry me up some tomaters...

hhhmmm green tomatoes. they're tart and crunchy on its own,  but even tastier when fried. i remember seeing the movie,
fried green tomatoes in a theater which means i was almost 12 when i saw it... which then makes me wonder why a 12 yr-old would go see a movie about an unhappy housewife who bonds with a lady in a nursing home.... but then again, a young chris o'donnell was in that movie and i do remember harboring a very long and intense crush on the boy as a young lass.

anyhoo, traditional recipes call for the use of cornmeal, but seeing as i didn't have any on hand the day i got these from my CSA, i improvised w/ a little egg wash and a mixture of italian and panko bread crumbs. my problem is keeping the crispy coating adhering to the tomatoes after frying them up. they always seem to come off the tomato and i'm not sure why. i've tried coating the tomato slice with flour first then egg wash it and then coat with the crumbs... but no dice. i'll keep working on it but either way, falling crust or not, these are still really great. i do enjoy throwing a tiny bit of kosher salt on top and eating it with a little hot sauce.... spicy!
